Science Tokyo recently announced a clinical milestone: an AR glasses-assisted bladder cancer surgery, performed on September 28, 2026 on a man in his 50s undergoing bladder-preserving therapy, proceeded smoothly after chemoradiotherapy. The intraoperative AR system was developed jointly by the urology team of associate professor Soichiro Yoshida and the electrical and electronic engineering team of associate professor Tomohiro Amemiya. It uses XREAL One Pro optical see-through AR glasses as the lead surgeon's core display, overlaying endoscope footage and other key surgical information directly in the surgeon's view, so they can watch the endoscope image, operate with both hands and monitor the surrounding environment without constantly shifting their gaze. The system also integrates supporting tech: an adapter by Thruster that automatically adjusts the endoscope image for the operator's stance, and Sony's medical imaging platform NUCLeUS to manage the OR's multiple video feeds over wired or wireless connections.

Science Tokyo recently announced a clinical achievement: the hospital has successfully completed an AR-glasses-assisted bladder cancer surgery. The operation was performed on September 28, 2026, on a male patient in his 50s undergoing conservative bladder management, carried out after chemoradiotherapy, and the entire procedure went smoothly. The intraoperative AR system was jointly developed by the team of Associate Professor Soichiro Yoshida of the university's Department of Urology and the team of Associate Professor Tomohiro Amemiya of the Faculty of Engineering's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as a medical-engineering collaboration project. The team chose the XREAL One Pro optical see-through AR glasses as the lead surgeon's core display terminal; leveraging the glasses' see-through display and light weight, key surgical information such as endoscope imagery is overlaid directly in the surgeon's field of view, so the doctor does not need to shift gaze frequently and can simultaneously watch the endoscope feed, their own hands at work, and the surrounding surgical environment. The system also integrates several supporting technologies. Paired with an adapter solution developed by Thruster, it automatically adjusts the display of the endoscope image according to the operator's position; it also connects to Sony's medical imaging platform NUCLeUS to centrally manage the multiple video feeds in the operating room, supporting both wired and wireless transmission modes. Besides the XREAL One Pro used by the lead surgeon, other surgical team members can wear the lighter xbx a01+ model to view the information in sync, improving surgical safety and operating precision through multi-role information coordination. The research is funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) through its Strategic Basic Research Program (CREST), under the research theme 'medical augmented reality glasses enabled by metamaterial technology,' with the project running from 2024 to 2029.
